What You Should Know About Black Paper

Have you ever walked through an office store and asked yourself, "Who in their right mind would use this?" I used to ask that about black paper, satin photo paper - pretty much every type of paper they sell. And, to tell the truth, I still ask it about a lot of office supplies. But I've learned to appreciate the more creative functions of paper.

Paper is one of the greatest inventions created. It allows for the recording of thoughts, numbers, information - and it's disposable enough (and easy enough to produce) that you don't have to hold on to it forever! It's also cheap, since it's so easy to make and so easy to use. But while white paper makes perfect sense, is there really a purpose in other types of paper?

Well, yes. You might not use another color or type of paper for normal types of printing, but there certainly is a use for these papers. While white paper will cover your needs for basic exchanging of information, there are lots of different paper types, which cover a variety of needs. Avid readers may notice that paperbacks are usually made of different paper than you would usually use in your printer; this is because it's cheaper to produce a book on that type of paper. It's also better suited to the type of ink usually used in book-printing.

Satin photo paper is useful for, well, printing photos. While that might be blatantly obvious, I've tried many a time to print photos off onto regular copy paper. While the photo does look somewhat like me, it still looks a little off. It looks cheap. With satin photo paper, the photo looks more like I'm actually there in the photo - and using the right kind of paper also improves the durability of the photo as well.

Black paper and I have a bit of a history, I'll confess. For any creative mind, black paper presents a multitude of opportunities, primarily because it shuts off a lot of other opportunities. White paper is blank, just waiting for anything with color to come along. Black paper, on the other hand, requires more creativity to mark up. A white crayon suddenly has purpose. Chalk is no longer just for the classroom (or sidewalk.) Pastels suddenly look so much brighter. Black paper gives you the opportunity to take everything that white paper doesn't allow - and suddenly it all works again! This is the miracle of black paper: to make the invisible visible again.

Old paper is one of the most searched terms on the internet when it comes to crafts. Finding the right type of old paper and black paper can be difficult if you don't know where to look.
